General Description

A miscellaneous collection of treatises in various hands. The contents are non-musical up to f. 50. Then come a number of musical treatises: Est autem unisonus (Anon. V in CoussS I, 366 ff.), De tonorum agnitionibus (f. 52), a Guidonian hand (f. 52 v), musical examples (f. 53-53 v), Cum in isto tractatu de figuris (Anon. VI in CoussS I, 369 ff.) and Cognita modulatione melorum secundum viam octo tonorum (Anon. IV in CoussS I, 327ff.). The latter treatise is in an older larger hand than the others, and is written in lines straight across the page, while the others are in 2 columns. The polyphonic music is an anonymous two-part Rondeau, which follows the treatise of Anon. VI. This codex originated at Bury St. Edmunds Abbey, since it bears the Abbey press-mark M. 83 and the words Liber monachorum Sancti Edmundi on f. 1 v.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A late 13th-early 14th century parchment manuscript meas. 218 x 152 mm. and containing 81 folios + 3 unnumbered modern paper flyleaves at each end. This codex originated at Bury St. Edmunds Abbey, since it bears the Abbey press-mark M. 83 and the words Liber monachorum Sancti Edmundi on f. 1 v. There is an occasional old foliation at t.m.r., e.g. at the beginning, but this is rare. Generally the foliation is a modern pencil one at t.r.r. The new binding in maroon morocco has strengthened the corners and spine; the royal garter appears in gilt on the cover and the title and crowns on the spine. This manuscript is a miscellaneous collection of treatises in various hands. The contents are non-musical up to f. 50. Then come a number of musical treatises, namely Est autem unisonus (Anon. V in CoussS I, 366 ff.), De tonorum agnitionibus (f. 52), a Guidonian hand (f. 52 v), musical examples (f. 53-53 v), Cum in isto tractatu de figuris (Anon. VI in CoussS I, 369 ff.) and Cognita modulatione melorum secundum viam octo tonorum (Anon. IV in CoussS I, 327ff.). The latter treatise is in an older larger hand than the others, and is written in lines straight across the page, while the others are in 2 cols. The polyphonic music is an anonymous two-part Rondeau, which follows the treatise of Anon. VI. It employs typical Ars Nova notation on 8 brown five-line staves per page. A dot over a note indicates perfect breves in the tenor.
