General Description

The Petre Gradual was sold abroad through Bernard Quaritch, and the only known record (i.e. the only available remnant) of it until 2014 was a set of negative photostats in the British Library which must have been obtained in 1952 or thereabouts. The British Library handlist of facsimiles gives the description as 'Photostats of music added on leaves in a Sarum gradual, formerly the property of the Petre family; 14th-15th cent. ff. 38-42'. Although DIAMM information suggests there were originally 8 pages with polyphony copied on them, only 5 were available at the BL, and these have been paginated and are the images available here.

The Gradual was rediscovered in the Robinson Collection at Newcastle University by Magnus Williamson in 2014 and has since been digitized by the University's Special Collections deptartment.
