General Description

Cambridge, University Library, MS Add. 2764 (1). A single parchment leaf, first mentioned by Manfred F. Bukofzer in Renaissance News 2 (1949), p.65, and more recently in EEC, pp.294–5. Contrary to all received statements, this (a) contains bits of two carols, not one, and (b) is not part of a carol roll, because there is absolutely no trace of sewing-holes, because the writing on the verso has a margin that proves that there is nothing lost at the bottom of the page, and because text is actually underlaid to the contratenor at the bottom of the page, even though the music needs a tenor below it. The music, in full-black notation and in perfect time, looks as though from the 1420s or 30s.
