General Description

A Missal, prepared by the ladies of the Munsterbilzen stift for a house of the Teutonic Knights, 16th century (Huglo), Among many other things this book contains a sequence A sequentia Hec in die grex noster with the opening words Laudes Dimpne plebs nostra decantat pie alleluia for Dimpna (AH 37, nr 180; Anal. Bolland. t. VI, pp. 396-397) added on the last folium. Dimpna was an Irish princess (ca 600); she fled from her father who wanted to marry her after the death of her mother. She went to Flanders with a priest of her father's court, named Gerebernus. Her father followed them, and, hysterical and insane with anger, he killed them. Dimpna was (and is) patron saint of Geel, of the mentally ill and epileptic. To more or less the same melody as Ave pulcherrima from NL-Au I C 17 there is also a 2-part hymn for Mauritius (facs: Huglo, p. 392, and Schreurs).
