RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: An early 15th century Cistercian Gradual meas. 37 x 28 cm. and containing three initial folios made of paper and lettered a-c followed by 156 parchment folios. There are usually 9-11 red four-line staves per page and the notation is of square plainsong type with single notes in the shape of semibreves. The script is semi-Gothic and makes use of large initials in red or blue with contrasting filling. The binding appears to be 16th century and is of much-worn leather over wooden boards. There are some tooling and five studs at front and back; two clasps are missing. The one polyphonic piece is the popular Kyrie from Vatican Mass V on f. 145. Although it has the text in both parts, it is in score notation. The page is divided into two for this piece, which occupies the left half, but otherwise there is no such division. The strokes marking the ends of phrases, e.g. the first three on line one, were added later in red. Incipit as ETw 44 3, but the parts are in reverse order.
