Contents 19 pieces from 2 composers
General Description

The main contents are Huguitio's Summa super derivationibus and Isidore's Etymologies written in 2 cols. 4 flyleaves at the beginning and 4 at the end (like Ob 7) contain three- and four-part, apparently English motets. Concordances prove that the last 4 folios contain predominantly French works, including some in the French language and others by Philippe de Vitry. The 2 pieces in three-part score on f. 4v appear to be a slightly later addition to the repertory of Petronian motets, for they use Ars Nova notation.

DIAMM, 2017
Binding

brown leather over wooden boards; modern. 1 extra parchment flyleaf at each end belongs to this binding.

DIAMM, 2017
Notation

Petronian (f. 1-4); Ars nova (concluding flyleaves)

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 14th century parchment manuscript meas. 340 x 222 mm. and containing 340 folios. There is a modern pencil foliation at t.r.r., though the last 4 pages are wrongly numbered 336*, 337, 338, 339 instead of 337-340. The main contents are Huguitio's Summa super derivationibus and Isidore's Etymologies written in 2 cols, with blue-red initials. The 4 flyleaves at the beginning and the 4 at the end, which date from the mid-14th century, are like Ob 7 in containing three- and four-part, apparently English motets in Petronian notation on f. 1-4 and motets in Ars Nova notation on the concluding flyleaves. Concordances prove that the last 4 folios contain predominantly French works, including some in the French language and others by Philippe de Vitry. The 2 pieces in three-part score on f. 4v appear to be a slightly later addition to the repertory of Petronian motets, for they use Ars Nova notation. There are 12 brown five-line staves per page at the beginning of the codex and 13 at the end. Like the ms corpus, the music sections also employ blue-red initials. 1 extra parchment flyleaf at each end belongs to the modern binding of brown leather over wooden boards. There are 2 clasps, a gilt title on the spine and arms on the cover. DRc 20 was evidently bought for Durham by John Wessyngton, a prior there, presumably in the 14th century (cf. fol. 5).

General Note

Though notated in 3 voice parts, the triplum (Ad lacrimas) splits into two vocal lines for the last two lines of each stanza - so this is a 4vv motet. The following piece in the ms is attributed to Vitry, and his name has sometimes been associated with this motet, although there is no direct evidence for this.

'O speculum' is not attributed to Vitry in the ms, though the following text is; therefore the attribution in DIAMM has been removed. A fortcoming article will discuss & cast doubt on Vitry's authorship.
