General Description

Manuscript containing a varied collection of musical treatises and music for use in the church of the Holy Sepulchre at Aachen. It includes pieces for the Ordinary of the mass, tropes, sequences, antiphons, responsories, a genealogy and complete offices. Such references as Hec sunt festivitates celebrande in domo hospitalis Jerusalem per annum and Incipit ordo legendi et cantandi in ecclesia sancti sepulcri are indicative of the origin of the codex. The corpus is predominantly in a moderately large, sharp-edged minuscule in two columns, the horizontals also serving as lines for the music.

The polyphony was added slightly later than the MS corpus by at least two different hands. The square notation does not indicate measure any more than the notation of the Notre Dame school does, and in fact this notation is very similar to the older one. The last piece, no. 7, is in a hand which fails to give any bar-lines, and the tails of the longs are very short or altogether missing. Gothic neumes are used on the same page as no. 1, and the repertoire is typically German.
