General Description

A mid-14th century manuscript. the main part of which is from England, but with additions on f. 1-3 and 101-106 written by Barbla. The principal work among the canonical, theological and philosophical treatises is the Sophismata of Guilelmus Hentisbery (f. 3-100v). This is written in 2 English cursive hands, but the Latin and German songs on f. 1-3 and 101-106 are written by a German hand. One of the additions on f. 102-103v is a treatise concerning the more noteworthy 'obligations' or prayers according to the Cambridge use.

The polyphony is written in parts, on what little room remains on the closely written ff. 105-106, and the music, in spite of the German text and tenor of the first piece, has English elements, particularly the tendency to write in thirds and sixths. The unusual setting of the text of no. 2, which begins with the Gloria in excelsis deo in full three-part polyphony, ending at bone voluntatis however, can be paralleled in the mid-15th century windows of the Beauchamp chapel in Warwick castle.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A mid-14th century parchment manuscript meas. 240 x 165 mm. and containing 106 folios. Although the main part of the ms is from England, the additions on f. 1-3 and 101-106 were written by Johannes Barbla, chaplain of St. Catherine's choir in Aachen c. 1394. The principal work to be found in this miscellany of canonical, theological and philosophical treatises is the Sophismata of Guilelmus Hentisbery (f. 3-100v). A list of contents for this work appears on f. 2v, together with the mention Liber fratris Johannis de Barbla. While the Sophismata is written in 2 English cursive hands, the Latin and German songs on f. 1-3 and 101-106 are written by a German hand. One of the additions on f. 102-103v is a treatise concerning the more noteworthy "obligations" or prayers according to the Cambridge use. The notation of the polyphony, which is written in parts on what little room remains on the closely written pages f. 105-106, is of Ars Nova type, and the music, in spite of the German text and tenor of the first piece, has English elements, particularly the tendency to write in thirds and sixths. The unusual setting of the text of no. 2, which begins with the Gloria in excelsis deo in full three-part polyphony, ending at bone voluntatis however, can be paralleled in no less a source than the mid-15th century windows of the Beauchamp chapel in Warwick castle. The binding of ETw 332 is made up of several parchment and paper leaves stuck together and covered with pigskin.
