General Description

The Summa de vitiis by Guillelmus Peraldus, written in a small but neat hand; the two musical pages (f. 127-128v) are one page of a musical manuscript. On f. 127 and 128v the music is in score, in spite of being a motet, while on the other the notation is in 2 columns and separate parts. The book originated in Bury St. Edmunds (the press-mark S 26 and the words Quaternus monachorum Sancti Edmundi are found on one of the old flyleaves at the beginning). On f. 126v in a later hand (c. 1500) are the words Pertinet Dompno Roberto Ypswych monacho (the last three words have erased the name of the previous owner). The book was presented to St. John's College by J. Holt.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A late 13th century parchment manuscript meas. 205 x 145 mm. and containing 125 folios. These are both preceded and followed by 3 old flyleaves: the first of the last 3 is a mere strip at the top of the page. There is no foliation. The corpus of the ms consists of the Summa de vitiis by Guillelmus Peraldus, which is closely written in a small but neat hand. The book originated in Bury St. Edmunds (the press-mark S 26 and the words Quaternus monachorum Sancti Edmundi may be read on one of the old flyleaves at the beginning. On f. 126v in a later hand c. 1500 may be read Pertinet Dompno Roberto Ypswych monacho (the last three words have erased the name of the previous owner). Finally the book was presented to St. John's College by J. Holt. The two musical pages (f. 127-128v) are in fact one page of a musical manuscript originally meas. c. 305 x 210 mm. There are 15 red five-line staves per page, but on one side (f. 127 and 128v) the music is in score, in spite of being a motet, while on the other the notation is in 2 columns and separate parts. In this section (f. 127v-128) the initials are in blue with red filigree. The notation is the so-called English mensural type employing longs and rhombs for the most part. The binding is the original white leather over wooden boards, the clasp being lost.
