General Description

A Bassus partbook from a set of four volumes. The main scribe was Christoph Piperinus (see below), who also wrote portions of BasU F.X.5-9 and BasU F.X.22-4. Other scribes: (1) Basilius Amerbach, who also wrote portions of BasU F.X.22-4 and manuscript additions in BasU kk.IV.23-7; (2) Samuel Ubelinus; (3) Ludwig Iselin, who also wrote BasU F.X.25-6 and portions of BasU F.X.21 (KmetzH). Copied in Basel. Owned by Basilius Amerbach (1533-91), son of the humanist Bonifacius Amerbach (inscription 'Sum Basila Amer-bachii Basiliensis' at beginning of each book). Manuscript referred to in 1546 letter to Amerbach from his music teacher, Christoph Piperinus (d. 1565). Later owned by Ludwig Iselin, nephew of Basilius Amerbach. Acquired by present library from Amerbach-Iselin estate c. 1661.

The following folios are blank or have blank staves only: D-l', 2-2', 17-59'; A-1'-3, 18-70'; T-1', 2-4', 9'-11', 29, 32-66'; B-1'-3', 18-51'. New pencil foliation; original numbering of pieces, 1-25 in D, 1-26 in ATB (the T has six additional pieces besides the numbered ones). Original paper covers. No index. Some texts in the D are in red.

Dates 1546-7 in manuscript. Inscription: "Sum Basilius Amerbachi Basiliensis"; Basilius Amerbach (1533-91) was the son of the prominent humanist Bonifacius Amerbach.
