RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 14th century parchment manuscript meas. 385 x 280 mm. from St. Kunibert in Cologne. This large folio complete mass ms consists of 430 folios, of which fol. 204-230 were interpolated c. 1480-1500. The ms corpus is written in Gothic script and the neumatic notation is also Gothic. The interpolated section is in a much larger script and the notation is of Hufnagel type. The binding is original white pigskin, but one of the two clasps of the same material has been lost. There is an obit dated 1346 on f. 1. As so often in German medieval sources, the only polyphonic work is the two-part Kyrie from Vatican mass V. This appears on f. 8, the first page of the Kyriale. The notation is on two four-line staves, whose lines are black, red, black and yellow in ascending order. The simultaneous use of c and F clefs is standard in this ms, but the clefs are often omitted. There are 15 staves to the page, and initials are in red and blue. The incipit of the two invocations of the polyphonic Kyrie given in the ms is undoubtedly identical with ETw 44 3.
