General Description

Two folios (possibly a bifolium, but not from the centre of a gathering), cut and folded to form flyleaves. Written space originally c. 245 x 180 mm (fol. 1), and c. 260 x 167 mm (fol. 2). Written in England, possibly at St Albans. Used to form the flyleaves of MS 230/116, a mid-15th century miscellany, containing extracts from John Whethamstede's Manipularius, an epitaph for Abbot Thomas de la Mare, and verses and several other items relating to the Benedictine Abbey of St Albans. MS 230/116 was written and probably bound at St Albans, and the abbey may well also be the source of the music leaves. Owned by William Moore, Fellow of Gonville and Caius College (1615-1647). Given or bequeathed 1659.

Ruling: twelve red five-line staves (14-18 mm) freely-ruled in systems of three; some frame rules, text guides, and a three-stave indentation (18 mm) ruled for an initial 'P' at the beginning of the second system on fol. 2. Collation: possibly a bifolium, but not from the centre of a gathering. Script: gothica textualis quadrata, with some lapses into semi-quadrata. Written in England, possibly at St Albans. Used to form the flyleaves of MS 230/116, a miscellany, s. xv med., containing extracts from John Whethamstede's Manipularius, an epitaph for Abbot Thomas de la Mare, and verses and several other items relating to the Benedictine Abbey of St Albans. MS 230/116 was written and probably bound at St Albans, and the abbey may well also be the source of the music leaves. Traces of an early binding, of leather over wooden boards, remain on pp. 1, 350. The first gathering, which includes a list of contents (pp. 9-24), lacks a quire-signature, and may be a slightly later addition to the book. Notes and verses on St Albans are added in a hand similar to that of MS 230/116 in the margins of the music leaves. Rebound by J. G. Gray and Son, Cambridge, 1909. Owned: William Moore, Fellow of Gonville and Caius College (1615-1647). Given or bequeathed 1659.
