General Description

Homilies, written in a neat minuscule script. Music is to be found on the 2 flyleaves at the end of the MS: these could be the outer bifolio of a gathering (quaternio). The music originated in a good scriptorium. Both score and motet notation are written right across the width of the leaf. The four-part Alleluia organum in this source reveals the predilection of the English for many-voiced part-writing as well as their conservatism in retaining organa in the 14th century.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 12th century parchment manuscript meas. 315 x 222 mm. and containing 136 folios + 2 new blank unnumbered paper pages at each end. The contents are homilies, written in a neat minuscule script with initials in red, blue or green with contrasting ornament (but sometimes without). There is a modern pencil foliation at t.r.r., and the modern binding in natural fawn leather was the work of Gray in November, 1956. The music pages are 2 flyleaves at the end of the ms and bear an original foliation (XCIII =modern 135, and C =modern 136). They date from the mid- or late 14th century, and could be the outer bifolio of a gathering (quaternio). The music originated in a good scriptorium (Worcester ?) and employs Ars Nova notation throughout, with frequent accidentals and mensuration signs. There are 12 red five-line staves per page, and both score and motet notation are written right across the width of the leaf. Here all the initials are blue with red filigree. The discovery of a four-part Alleluia organum in this source reveals once again the predilection of the English for many-voiced part-writing as well as their conservatism in retaining organa in the 14th century.
