General Description

Probably a bifolium, not from the centre of a gathering. The written space is 237 x 155 mm, with ruled indentations (c. 10 mm) for initials. The script is a gothica textualis rotunda. Used to form the front flyleaf and rear pastedown of MS 519, a miscellany of theological and historical works, including Benet Burgh's verse translation into English of the Disticha Catonis, John of Hildesheim's Gesta trium magorum, Robert of Lincoln's De confessione, the Visio Tundali and other texts. MS 519 falls into two parts, bound together probably from an early date, written s. xv med. (fols. 12-101) and s. xv ex. (fols.1-11, 102-221). Fol. 221v is signed 'Taco. h. Bos de Fonte. ... inp' ' in the hand of the main text of the manuscript. Two or more fifteenth-century hands have added on the music leaves a list of contents of MS 519 (fol. lv), Latin verses, the words 'iij clobls clabardy- ... on cloble lynghe', 'Iste liber pertinet be... hions ...' (fol. 222) and other jottings now illegible. 'John Herte' (fols, lv, 79), 'John Slad' (fol. 150), s. xvi in. Rebacked 1939; rebound 1988 in goatskin. Owned: James Usher, Archbishop of Dublin, d. 1656 (his pressmark 'III. 17', fol. 2); given by Charles II in 1661.

The MS contains part of a cycle, following the liturgical calendar, of pieces based on Alleluia chants for major feasts from St Michael to St Andrew; another series of settings of these Alleluias appears in the Harley Index (Lbl, Harley MS 978, fol. lóOv). The texts of the upper voices trope the Alleluia texts. 1 Final section of a setting continued from the preceding verso; end only of T, which carries the plainsong Alleluia V. In conspectu (GS, pl. 197) from the melisma on 'deus'. On St Michael. 2 Opening of T, and final section lost. T carries plainsong Alleluia V. Iudicabunt (GS, pl. 199), and can be reconstructed for the first section. On All Saints. 3 Opening of T lost; T carries plainsong Alleiuia V. Hic Martinus (GS, pl. 200). On St Martin. 4 End lost. T carries plainsong Alleluia V. Dilexit (GS, pl. g). On St Andrew.

Binding

bound in speckled calf over pith boards until 1988. Like several similar bindings among the Trinity College manuscripts, this was the work of John Exshaw of Dublin, who bound it between 1741 and 1744 (Colker, I, p. 18). Traces of a s. xv binding (probably the original) of whittawed leather over wooden boards, including impressions made by sewing bands, remain on fol. 222v, formerly pasted down.
