General Description

A Tenor II from a set originally of eight volumes (Discantus II and Bassus I partbooks from same set now StockKB 229; other books apparently lost). Copied by several scribes. Some pieces have text incipits or titles only. Copied in Stockholm, for use at court of Erik XIV, King of Sweden. Compilation possibly associated with Jørgen Heyde and Johann Paston, who came to Stockholm in 1556 and 1559 respectively, following service at Danish royal court in Copenhagen. Manuscript acquired at unknown date by German Church in Stockholm, whose collection (= Tyska Kyrkans Samling) was donated to present library in 1874.

Original covers of brown leather, blind tooled with voice designations, ornamental designs, representations of Christ, the four Evangelists, St. John the Baptist, St. Peter, and St. Paul, each with appropriate motto inscriptions, and several female figures personifying 'Spes,' 'Fides,' 'Iusticia,' and 'Charitas.' Binding and covers probably from workshop of Hans Düsterbach (d. 1591), of Stockholm (HedbergSB). Last gathering (= ff. [39-52]) not bound together with other gatherings.
