General Description

A Sextus partbook from a set of six volumes. Repertory arranged in four sections ('Tomus primus' … 'Tomus quartus'), as follows: (1) Responsories, Te Deums, Introits; (2) 4-voice, 5-voice, 6-voice Masses; (3) Alleluias, Sequences, responses, Benedicamus dominos; (4) psalms, hymns, Magnificats. Title page etc indicate that this was the first volume of an original two-volume set; the second volume is apparently lost (see HoffO for discussion).

Copied in Hamburg by Jacob Praetorius I (title page), organist at churches of St. Gertrud and St. Jacob in Hamburg from 1555 until his death in 1586. Dedication to Johann Albrecht I (1525-76), Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and to Johann's brother, Duke Ulrich III (1527-1603). Probably given to university library at Rostock by Johann Albrecht.

Original covers of dark brown leather tooled with ornamental designs, voice designations, and "Primi voluminis." Original indices at beginning of each section in T book list pieces in order of appearance. Copied by Jacob Praetorius I (title page). No initials or decoration.
