General Description

An Altus partbook from a set of six volumes. Repertory arranged in four sections ('Tomus primus' … 'Tomus quartus'), as follows: (1) Responsories, Te Deums, Introits; (2) 4-voice, 5-voice, 6-voice Masses; (3) Alleluias, Sequences, responses, Benedicamus dominos; (4) psalms, hymns, Magnificats. Title page etc indicate that this was the first volume of an original two-volume set; the second volume is apparently lost (see HoffO for discussion).

Copied in Hamburg by Jacob Praetorius I (title page), organist at churches of St. Gertrud and St. Jacob in Hamburg from 1555 until his death in 1586. Dedication to Johann Albrecht I (1525-76), Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and to Johann's brother, Duke Ulrich III (1527-1603). Probably given to university library at Rostock by Johann Albrecht.
