4 paper partbooks of an original 12 (D1-ii + iii + 139 + ii folios, Al-ii + ii + 139 + ii + ii, Tl-ii + i + 139 + i + i, B2-ii + i + 59 + i + ii), 275-80x210. RomeBN 117-21 are A2, D3, A3, T3, and B3 books from same original set; Bl, Q, and S books now missing,* [Footnote: 'The Bl, Q, and S books are believed to have been in the Archivio della Congregazione dell'Oratorio in Rome until at least ca. 1958. They are described by LockCR, 321, as being in the "Convento dei Padri Filippini" [= Archivio della Congregazione dell'Oratorio]. Since the time of Lockwood's research, these three partbooks have apparently been removed from the Archivio della Congregazione dell'Oratorio; their present location is unknown. However, the four partbooks listed by LockCR as missing (i.e., D3, A3, T3, and B3, containing parts for the à12 works) have subsequently been located; they are now preserved in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale Vittorio Emanuele II, as noted above.]but 1821 transcription of entire set, by Abbate Fortunato Santini, is preserved in Münster (Westphalia), Bischöfliche Diözesanbibliothek, MS 3590. Some folios damaged by ink corrosion were restored and gauzed in 1976. Original ink foliation in each book, with some errors and inconsistencies corrected in pencil by modern hand. Original covers of yellow parchment, restored in 1976; modern brown ribbon ties. Original index on three flyleaves at beginning of Dl book lists pieces in order of appearance.
Earliest layer copied by a single scribe (possibly Pompeius Paterius, named at beginning of each book), in sections grouped by increasing number of voices; two later scribes added further pieces on blank folios at end of each section, retaining voice groupings established by earliest scribe. Staff height 13.5 and 14.5. Inked calligraphic initials. Watermarks: (1) three-peaked mountain in circle, surmounted by six-pointed star; (2) bird in circle, surmounted by crown; (3) chevron in circle, surmounted by crown; (4) star on shield.
Occasional inconsistencies between voice designations on covers and voice parts actually contained in books (i.e., Dl book also contains some D2 and other parts, etc.)
Ca. 1590-1620 (LockCR). Probably copied in Rome (LockCR). Original owner and compiler possibly Pompeius Paterius, named at beginning of each book.
