General Description

Portion of an Altus partbook from a set originally of five volumes. Copied by Jean Michel, scribe at Este court in Ferrara (RifNL). Complete original contents known through 18th-century Catalogus estensum manuscriptorum codicum preserved in Archivio di Stato in Modena, which lists one of the partbooks as 'Codex DCCCXXXVI' (RifNL). Copied in Ferrara, for use at court of Ercole II d'Esté, Duke of Ferrara (1508-59). Portion of original A book which is now ParisBNN 4599 apparently still in Italy in 17th century (inscription at beginning). Came to Bibliothèque Nationale at an unknown time.

Portion of 1 partbook of an original 5 (A-i paper + 12 parchment + i paper folios), 139 x 212. Another portion of A book now LonBL 19583 (RifNL); portions of T and B books now ModE F.2.29 (LowMCE); D and Q books apparently lost. Modern pencil foliation, 1-12. Modern covers of black boards. No index. Copied by Jean Michel, scribe at Este court in Ferrara (RifNL); see general index for other manuscripts copied by the same scribe. Inked calligraphic initials.
