General Description

Copied by one main scribe. The MS. was discovered in the late 19th ct. in Valencia and bought by Juan Bautista Guzmán (1846-1909) in 1887. The second flyleaf presents a letter which refers to the circumstances of the MS.’s acquisition. At first, the MS. became part of the school library of the Monasterio de Montserrat. In the mid 1920s, it was transferred to the monastery library.

Original ink foliation, 1-132, begins on second original folio (omits first original folio, now missing, and one folio following f. 114; f. 127 also missing). New covers of green cardboard. Modern index by Juan Bautista Guzman on first modern flyleaf at back lists pieces in order of appearance. Copied by a single scribe, except for third flyleaf at front, which contains modern restoration of music on lost original folio at beginning. Staff height 16. Inked calligraphic initials. Title on recto of first flyleaf: "Musica de atril / del / Sigio XVI."

Late 16th century. Perhaps copied in Valencia or Segorbe. Discovered in Valencia in late 19th century; in the possession of Padre Juan Bautista Guzman (1846-1909) of Valencia by 1887 (letter on parchment flyleaf discusses Padre Guzman's acquisition of the manuscript). Later brought to Benedictine monastery at Montserrat by Padre Guzman; placed in music school library under call number "23." In mid 20th century, manuscript received present call number in connection with transfer to Biblioteca del Monestir (housed elsewhere in same monastery).
