General Description

Consists of a number of originally individual MSS. Fols 68, 73v., 78, 81r, 82v. show rastration markings only; fols 26v-27, 40v-41r, 46v, 49r, 56v and 74v were reserved for titles or rubrics and also contain children’s drawings. Copied by one main scribe with minor additions by three further scribes. Acquired by the Monasterio de Montserrat in the 1920s.

71 + i paper folios, c. Composite of several originally separate fascicles. Original ink foliation, 1-82 (ff. 2-10 and ff. 47-48 now missing; some numbers obliterated by later trimming, but restored in modern pencil). Folios presently misbound in following sequence: 1, 11-46, 75-82, 49-74. Blank staves only on ff. 62', 68-68', 73', 78-78', 81, 82'; ff. 26'-27, 40'-41, 46', 49, 56', and 74' are blank, except for rubrics, titles, or scribbled drawings, apparently by children. Original covers of leather over wooden boards, with two brass buckles. Original index on f. 1.

Copied by one main scribe and three other scribes, with restorations by two later hands. Several fascicles have inked calligraphic initials, some decorated with grotesque faces; one fascicle has large plain initials; remaining fascicles have no decoration. No watermarks visible. Manuscript also contains mono-phonic antiphons and responsories.

Early 17th century. Perhaps copied in Madrid, for use at the Real Convento de las Senoras de la Encarnaçion. Acquired from the Encarnaçion by Benedictine monastery at Montserrat, probably during 1920's.
