General Description

A single partbook containing various voice parts, mostly tenor. Ten pieces, for keyboard, written on two staves; pieces on ff. 51'-52 and ff. 54'-55' notated in lute tablature. Several layers, copied at different times by six scribes. Manuscript linked by common scribes and repertory to keyboard manuscript Royal Appendix 56 in this library (PartonT). Probably copied in London (GreS). Apparently a commonplace book in which several professional musicians associated with English royal court entered useful pieces (StMP).

1 paper partbook (Various voice parts, mostly tenor-vi +58 + v folios), 150 x 200-10. Modern ink foliation, 1-58, crossed out and replaced by more recent pencil foliation, 1-60, which begins with fifth flyleaf. (Following references are to pencil foliation). Modern (1757) covers of brown leather and cloth. Fragment of original parchment cover, inscribed "Tenor," pasted to f. 1; fragment of original title page pasted to f. 2. No index.

Most pieces in white mensural notation; some others in various chant notations, including "strene" notation (see BentN). Ca. 1515-40 (BernsCE); lute pieces probably entered after 1551 (WardLM). Probably copied in London (GreS). Apparently a commonplace book in which several professional musicians associated with English royal court entered useful pieces (StMP). Possibly owned later by Henry Fitzalan, 12th Earl of Arundel (d. 1580), whose library passed to his son-in-law, John, 6th Baron Lumley (d. 1609). Arundel-Lumley collection became part of Old Royal Library, which passed to newly founded British Museum in 1757.
