General Description

An Altus partbook from a set originally of five volumes. Main corpus copied by Thomas Wode or Wood (d. 1592), vicar at St. Andrews, who is named as scribe on several pages; other unidentified scribes made additions in early 17th century. Main corpus compiled and copied in St. Andrews, Fifeshire, Scotland; later additions possibly copied in Aberdeen (HutchiS). One psalm setting copied partly by John Buchan (inscription in [Lbl Add. MS 33933][1]); one canticle setting copied partly by Andrò Kemp (inscription on p. 119 of Bassus book); other unidentified scribes made additions in early 17th century. The subsequent history of the set prior to 19th century is not known (except for duplicate Discantus book (EdinU Dk.5.14), in Edinburgh University Library since 1672). Apparently, some or all books were at one time in Ireland, but only this Quintus book DubT 412 has remained there. Discantus and Tenor books purchased by the antiquarian David Laing at 1867 sale in London; belonged earlier to unidentified Irish clergyman. Bass book purchased by a Mr. Blackwood, of Edinburgh, at Dublin auction; apparently acquired by Laing in 1835 ('D. Laing 1835' inside front cover). The three books (DTB) passed to their present library following Laing's death.

1 paper partbook of an original 5 (A-i + 94 + i folios), 180 x 130. D, T, and B books now EdinU 483 (a-c); Q is DubT F.5.13. (A duplicate of this set was copied by the same scribes, but only D and B books have survived; these are now EdinU Dk.5.14-5). Many folios missing; some partly torn away. Original ink pagination, 13-218. Pages now missing: 1-12, 21-22, 33-34, 45-46, 81-82, 103-108, 111-114, 137-138, and unknown number at end. The main scribe (ff. 1-81) was Thomas Wode or Wood, whose name appears on several folios. Two pieces by John Buchan (ff. 13'-14, ff. 37-37') possibly copied by the composer. A third scribe copied ff. 81'-82, fourth scribe copied ff. 82-93'; latter two worked in early 17th century. Section copied by Wode decorated with painted initials and floral motifs in green, yellow, tan, purple, orange, and blue; a few folios have rough drawings of objects or scenes appro-priate to psalm text on that opening. No other decoration. No watermarks visible.

1562-92, with early 17th century additions. Main corpus compiled and copied at St. Andrews, Fifeshire, Scotland, by Thomas Wode or Wood (d. 1592), vicar at St. Andrews. Early 17th century owner added unrelated repertory of English secular music. Subsequent history of set prior to 19th century not known (except for duplicate D book, EdinU Dk.5.14, in Edinburgh University Library since 1672). Apparently, some or all books were at one time in Ireland. Several (but not LonBL 33933) later owned by the 19th-century Scottish antiquarian David Laing. LonBL 33933 purchased by British Museum from Mrs. H. L. Andrews in 1890.
