General Description

An Evangeliarium dating mainly from the 13th century (f. 1-28v), then from the 14th century and towards the end even later (f. 29-43). In addition to the 43 parchment folios meas. 306 x 210 mm., there are two unnumbered modern paper flyleaves at each end. These belong to the modern binding. The script is clearly Gothic. Music appears only between f. 29 and 40, but the singers are clearly designated as Tenor, Contra and Altus. The singing of the gospel on f. 37v-40 is by each singer in turn, all joining in with the final word of the verse in three parts. Each part is written separately, with the word simul denoting polyphony. On f. 35 instructions are given for the performance of this music in the office of the three kings at Epiphany.

In addition to the 43 parchment folios meas. 306 x 210 mm., there are two unnumbered modern paper flyleaves at each end. These belong to the modern binding, doubtless 19th century, which consists of a variously coloured, mottled cover of whorls with red leather spine lettered "Office des Fetes" in gold. There is a modern pencil foliation at t.r.r., and an old ink foliation (1-30) occurs from, the present f. 6-35. Initials are in blue and red. The script is clearly Gothic in tendency and the notation is large and square, using 7 red four-line staves per page. Music appears only between f. 29 and 40, but the singers are clearly designated as Tenor, Contra and Altus. The singing of the gospel on f. 37v-40 is by each singer in turn, all joining in with the final word of the verse in three parts.
