General Description

A single Altus partbook; ParisBNC 255 is the tenor book from the same set. Two main scribes; four additional hands. Probably compiled after 1570 from previously separate fascicles (Call, based on repertory and fascicle structure). The oldest gatherings (ff. 1-7' and ff. 32-39', in the hand of scribe I) were probably copied in the late 1520's or early 1530's for Jacques Daillon, a courtier and soldier of Francis I (Rifkin, based on heraldic evidence in ParisBNC 255). Much of the repertory in the remaining gatherings appears in Le Roy et Ballard prints from c. 1545 to 1570.
