General Description

Flyleaves to a 75 folio manuscript from the library of John Angeli Altaemps, containing Lives of Cicero and Virgil. The flyleaves served originally as covers and now as endpapers; they were originally c. 300 x 220 mm. According to Besseler the leaves are perhaps from a north Italian manuscript; according to Fischer they come from a peripherally Florentine manuscript of the late 14th century. Cuthbert (p. 300) numbers the music containing parts of this manuscript as f. Ir/v and f. IIr/v., explaining that they were originally the other way round:

f. Ir [originally verso]

f. Iv [originally recto]

f. IIr [originally verso]

f. IIv [originally recto]

Curthbert also points to the unidentified work, item no. 3: 'The presence of additional music was noted by Fischer in RISM B IV 4 (p. 1033).'

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 4: 14./15. Jh.; 75 Blätter Pergament, 170 x 113 mm + je 1 Vorsatz- und Nachstoßblatt Pergament, 110 x 167 mm (Querformat). Fol. 18. Jh.(?) von f. 1-77 (Vorsatz- und Nachstoßblätter inklusive). - Einband : 18.

Jh.

[Translation] 14th/15th century. 75 parchment sheets, 170 x 113 mm + 1 each front and back endpapers of parchment, 110 x 167 mm (landscape). 18th-century (?) foliation of f. 1-77 (endpapers included). - Cover: 18 century (?); reddish brown leather with gold lettering.

This 15th-century manuscript from the library of John Angeli Altaemps contains Lives of Cicero and Virgil. Music is found only on the two fragments which served originally as cover and now as endpapers. These sheets were originally a size of approximately 300 x 220 mm. The pages still have 3 red five-line systems with black Trecento notation. According to Besseler the leaves are perhaps from a north Italian manuscript; according to Fischer they come from a peripherally Florentine manuscript of the late 14th century.
