General Description

A Discantus partbook from a set of twelve volumes. Copied by four scribes: two main hands; one hand executed only no. 78 in the VII. and VIII. vox, another the addenda nos. 138-140. Of German origin.

The books are presumed to have been previously owned by a Johannes Schiffmann from Bautzen, as was Mus. ms. 40042. The last previous owner before the books passed to the library was Friedrich Naue (1787-1858) of Halle.

Many watermarks, including: Coat of arms with crancelin and inscription DRESTEN (Briquet no. 1203 - Dresden 1577-1591); coat of arms with inscription DITTERSBACH; letter C in circle with pearls, very similar to Briquet no. 8116; letter C in circle with illegible inscription, similar to Briquet no. 8118; coat of arms with inscription HERMESDORF; coat of arms with crossed swords; coat of arms with T-shaped bone oak.

Dates 1570 and 1628 in manuscript. Cantus, Quinta & Sexta have dated 'title pages': [Sexta] Voluminum horum musicorum quae continent harmonias varias a peritissimis musicis elaboratas anno Christi 1614. Cantus also dated 1614 on f. 121v.
