General Description

Polyphony on pp. 228-247, copied by a single scribe, who also wrote much of the monophonic music. Copied in northern Italy. Manuscript probably remained at Franciscan monastery for which it was copied until mid 20th century, then offered for sale. Acquired in 1971 by the musicologist Laurence Feininger from unidentified antiquarian book dealer in Florence. Feininger collection passed to present library after owner's death in 1976.

RISM Description

RISM

Ce ms., très endommagé par 1'inondation de l'Arno en novembre 1966, a été acheté à un antiquaire de Florence (Olschki?) en 1971 par le P. Laurence Feininger qui, à sa mort, l'a légué avec toute sa collection à la bibliothèque de Trente (1976). Cette collection n'étant pas encore consultable, la description du ms. est donnée d'après FeiningerENQ (cf. Bibliogr.). Il s'agit d'un ms. composite, les 10 pièces polyphoniques dépouillées ici formant un ensemble copié aux 7e et 8e cahiers d'un petit livre liturgique pour l'usage privé (choeur ou procession), d'origine franciscaine, qui comprend des Responsoria, hymnes, Offices des morts, etc. On peut penser que divers petits manuels d'une communauté franciscaine ont été reliés ensemble pour constituer un ouvrage de valeur marchande, comme semble l'indiquer aussi la magnifique initiale sur fond d'or qui ornait la reliure originale, remplacée après l'inondation par une reliure moderne.

Rebound in modern leather covers. Monophony in square chant notation; polyphony (pp. 228-247) in black mensural notation on 4-line staves. Polyphony copied by a single scribe, who also wrote much of the monophonic music. Inked Gothic initials in alternating red and blue.

Mid 15th century. Copied in northern Italy. Manuscript probably remained at Franciscan monastery for which it was copied until mid 20th century, then offered for sale. Acquired in 1971 by the musicologist Laurence Feininger from unidentified antiquarian book dealer in Florence. Feininger collection passed to present library after owner's death in 1976.
