General Description

A Discantus partbook from a set originally of four volumes. Copied by a single scribe, except for last piece, added by different hand. Copied in Rome. Compiled for Giulio de' Medici (1478-1534; Pope Clement VII after 1523) or for other member of Medici family. Acquired, perhaps c. 1553-63, by Ulrich Fugger (1526-84), of Augsburg (possibly through Ulrich's book collector, Henricus Scrimger); later incorporated in Palatine electoral library in Heidelberg. See VatP 1347 for subsequent history of electoral library.

XVIe s. 183ff. Papier, 155 x 101 mm. Foliotation moderne au bas des ff. et numérotation ancienne des messes en ch. romains: I-XVIII. Les ff. 1r-v, 5, 111v, 121v, 163v sont blancs. Notation mesurée blanche. 7 portées par p. Capitales et noms d'auteurs en coul. Reliure ancienne (dos refait) cuir estampé aux armes des Médicis (6 palle) et portant sur le plat CANTUS, seule partie qui subsiste.

Ce ms., comme tous ceux du fonds Palatino latino, a été copié dans le nord et ne présente aucun des caractères des mss. italiens. Le répertoire franco-flamand comprend 18 messes (Sup. seul') pour la plupart copiées aussi dans d'autres sources.

*Mass IX, ff. 83'-92, attributed to "M. Jam petit"; Mass XVIII, ff. 174-183, attributed to "Petit Jam." Based on dating of this source (see below), this composer is clearly too early to be identified with Jehan de Lattre or Claude Petit Jehan, and probably too late to be identified with Jehan Charvet (called "Petit Jan" in NHavY 91). Identification with Ninot le Petit rejected by Barton Hudson, editor of NinotW. Jhan of Ferrara is not referred to as "Petit," and most of his works postdate repertory of VatP 1982.
