General Description

Composite of originally separate fascicles; new ff. 144-148, containing fragmentary Brumel Mass, now bound in incorrect sequence. The main scribe was Johannes Orceau (SherrPC). Two additional scribes: (scribe 1) ff. 36'-55, 69'-93, 129'-140 (also wrote most of VatS 15, ff. 218'-227 of VatS 23, ff. 87'-103 of VatS 41, and ff. 39'-44, 59'-63, and 65'-70 of VatS 63; (scribe 2) ff. 56'-68 (also wrote ff. 38'-49 of VatS 41, and ff. 71'-75 of VatS 63). Copied in Rome, for use by Cappella Sistina.

XVIe. s. 148ff. Papier, 568 x 427 mm. Foliotation moderne. Les ff. lr-v, 2, 22v, 23, 35v, 36, 55v, 56, 68v, 69, 83v, 84, 93v, 94, 97v, 98,109v, 110,119v, 120,128v, 129, 140v à 144, 148v sont blancs. Notation mesurée blanche. 10-11 portées par p. Capitales ornées de visages à la plume.

Réuni en 1 vol. sous le pontificat de Jules II (1503-1513) dont les armoiries figurent au f. 98v, ce ms. de plusieurs mains a été constitué à partir de fascicules séparés copiés à différentes époques remontant peut-être même avant 1503, le répertoire comprenant des compositeurs actifs au tournant des XVe-XVIe s., sinon en plein XVe s. comme Dufay et Isaac. Les armoiries qui figurent au f. 98v, considérées jusqu'à présent comme celles de Jules II, seraient plus probablement celles du Cardinal Antonio Ferreri, maître de la Chapelle papale depuis 1504 (cf. Rvat 23, description).
