General Description

Theoretical treatises by Gafori (Extractus parvus musicae' and 'Tractatus brevis cantus plani' on ff. 1-34 and ff. 55'-73, respectively) with polyphonic pieces on ff. 34'-38, 44'-46', 47'-49, and 51'-53. The main scribe was Franchino Gafori, who also wrote parts of MilD 1-4; ff. 34'-38 copied by a different hand. Texts of two Italian pieces praise Guglielmo VIII, Marquis of Monferrato (1404-83). Main corpus copied in Lodi; marginal notes probably copied in Naples (MilleG). Originally owned by the theorist and composer Franchino Gafori (1451-1522).

XVe s. 73ff. Papier, 300 x 225 mm.

  1. f. 1-34 «Exordium presbiteri Franchini Gafori laudensis super extractum parvum musice ad Philippum Trexenum clericum laudensem musice professorem … Incipit ars musice breviter descripta …»

  2. f. 56-64v [Précédé d'une main guidonienne au f. 55v] «Incipit tractatus brevis cantus plani extractus a musicis doctoribus per Franchinum Gaforum laudensem ad Paulum Grecum …»

  3. «Incipit quoddam opusculum cantus plani valde fructuosum cantoribus …»

General Note

Only the beginning is texted; several pages of untexted music follow, but break off incomplete on f. 38v. Several more pages follow, ruled with staves but blank. it seems likely that the untexted music belongs to the mass, and that the blank pages were intended for completing the copying of the mass -- or it may be that the untexted music is unrelated to the mass. The untexted music breaks off with a fragment on f. 38v; this was previously inventoried as the chanson 'La dolente', model for the mass, but Eric Jas confirms this is not part of the music of the chanson.

untexted fragment of f. 38v is not the chanson La plus dolente. It seems that the mass on the chanson was not copied in full and breaks off here.
