General Description

Composite of two incomplete manuscripts (defined by new ff. 1-69' and 70-94'), originally separate but linked by several common scribes, brought together in late 16th or early 17th century. Copied by one main scribe and four additional scribes (scribal concordances with ModD 3, 4, and 10), with later additions (ff. 94-94') by Orazio Vecchi, whose hand also appears in ModD 11 and ModD 12. Copied in Modena, for use by the cathedral choir.

XVIe s. 95 ff. Papier, 490 x 320 mm. Foliotation ancienne: 50-121 et foliotation moderne: 1-95. Dans la foliotation moderne, les ff. 67r-v et 68 sont blancs. Notation mesurée blanche. 12 portées par p. Grandes initiales ornées à la plume. Reliure moderne portant: «Restaurato dall'Ist. di Patologia del libro 1973.»

Comme le ms. III avec lequel il présente certains scribes en commun, le ms. IX se rattache à Modène où il fut certainement copié, ainsi que le montrent les 2 motets de Willaert: no 32 dédié à Geminiano, saint patron de la ville, et no 33 en l'honneur de S. Sebastiano, patron de la Mensa Comune, congrégation de religieux chanteurs, indépendante de la cathédrale. On peut distinguer 2 parties dans le ms.: I, du no 1 au no 35, Motets, section qui correspond à peu près à ce qui a survécu de l'ancienne foliotation 50-121 (= 1-70v). II, du no 36 à la fin, Lamentations et textes de carême. Ces 2 parties ont été copiées à la même époque, approximativement entre 1518 et 1531. Dans la section des motets, Mouton l'emporte avec 8 ou 9 pièces, suivi par Willaert avec 6 ou 7, tandis que pour les Lamentations, Carpentras est le mieux représenté avec 4 cycles.
