General Description

Polyphony on ff. 109'-110' and ff. 119'-128. Copied in Venice and Piacenza (CattT). Original owner and compiler was Johannes Franciscus Preottonus, a Benedictine monk from Pavia (inscription on f. 47). Acquired c. 1489 by Fassone Fassati, a student at Pavia University (inscription on f. 3'). Owned in 20th century by Count Fernando Passi, of Brescia, and by the antiquarian Walter Toscanini; purchased by Library of Congress in 1932.

RISM BIV/4: 15. Jh.; 187 Blätter Papier + je 1 Vorsatz- und Nachstoßblatt Pergament (12. Jh.) + 3 + 10 Blätter (dem Hauptcorpus vorangestellt), 208 x 150 mm. Originale Foliierung von f. a-k (10 Blätter) und von f. 1-112, 124-126; moderne Foliierung von f. 113-123 und 127-187. Je Seite mit Musik: 4 oder 5 Fünfliniensysteme mit schwarz-roter Quadrat- und Mensuralnotation - Einband: mit Leder überzogene Holzdeckel.

Diese teilweise 1465 in einem oberitalienischen Benediktinerkloster von "dominus Johannes Franciscus de Papia monachus venerabilis cenobij Georgij de Venetijs" geschriebene Handschrift enthält neben musiktheoretischen Traktaten von Marchetto, Joh. de Muris, Hothby unter anderem einzelne nicht zu den Traktaten gehörende, mehrstimmige Stücke, die aber vermutlich von der gleichen Hand wie die Traktate eingetragen worden sind. Die Handschrift gehörte 1493 einem Studenten der Universität Pavia (Fassone Fassati). Später befand sie sich im Besitze von F. Passi, dann in der Bibliothek einer Piemonteser Adelsfamilie. 1932 verkaufte sie der Antiquar W. Toscanini der Library of Congress.
