General Description

Contains mostly Marian hymns and sequences in Latin, with Marienklagen in the German language. The term 'Antiphona' in the book refers generally to songs or processional chants. With one exception (No. 14), the polyphony of the items referred to in the inventory is controversial. It can be assumed that, just as in D-TR322 some older Motet works of the 15th-century were sung monophonically. Thus the respective rubrics 'Antiphona' may often indicate a very different transcription of the pieces which have problematic harmonies and lack rests. Written in 1430 in the Benedictine abbey of Tegernsee, and was moved to the Bavarian State Library in 1790.

RISM Description

RISM BIV/3: 15.

Binding: white leather-covered wooden boards with blind tooling, clasps and fittings missing.

According to JE Emerson this manuscript was written in 1430 in the Benedictine abbey of Tegernsee, and was moved to the Bavarian State Library in 1790. The manuscript contains mostly Marian hymns and sequences in Latin, with Marienklagen in the German language. The term "Antiphona" in the book refers generally to songs or processional chants. With one exception (No. 14), the polyphony of the items referred to in the inventory is controversial. It can be assumed that, just as in D-TR322 some older Motet works of the 15th-century were sung monophonically. Thus the respective rubrics "Antiphona" may often indicate a very different transcription of the pieces which have problematic harmonies and lack rests.

Contents: f. 1-4v Speculum Musicae (according to Aristotle and Boethius), songs, Benedicamus domino; f. 5-149v Marian hymns and sequences, and similar; f. 150-154 Marienklagen; f. 154-205v songs and sequences for various feasts.
