General Description

Copied by Netherlands court scribe Petrus Alamire (KellJ); WarmMC distinguishes two music and/or text scripts: scribe D (ff. l'-7, 9'-14, 17-28, 29'-41, 42'-43',44'-52', 56'-60', 62', 64', 90'-101, 104'-112, 113'-117); and scribe X (ff. 8'-9, 15'-20, 29'-30', 42'-53', 54'-65, 66'-76, 77'-89, 102'-107, 108-112). Copied in Brussels/Mechlin; belongs to Netherlands court complex (KellJ). Emperor Maximilian I may have originally intended to send this manuscript, along with JenaU 7 and JenaU 9, to Henry VIII of England. Maximilian instead sent the manuscripts to Frederick the Wise, Elector of Saxony (RoediT). They were used at the All Saints Church in Wittenberg, and remained there until 1547, when a later Elector, Johann Friedrich I, was deposed. He retired to Weimar, taking with him the court library, including these manuscripts. The collection was transferred to Jena in 1548 to become the foundation of the library of the Hochschule (later Jena University) founded by Johann Friedrich.
