General Description

The principal contents of the MS are a Gradual (f. 9-136v), a Tonary (f. 141v to 146) followed by 3 Kyrie Tro (f. 146-147v), a Hymnary (f. 147v-177v) and a Troper, Proser and Kyriale (f. 177v-244v). The companion MS 1236 is an Antiphoner. The only polyphonic piece is the well-known voice-exchange hymn, lam lucis orto sydere, the two parts following each other on f. 148v. From the cathedral of St. Cyr in Nevers.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 12th century parchment manuscript meas. 278 x 185 mm. and containing 236 folios + 4 unnumbered paper leaves at each end. In addition, 1 parchment leaf follows the 4 paper leaves at the beginning. This volume is bound in 19th century half-leather in red with mottled paper at the front over pulp boards. The notation is mainly in elegant French neumes on 13 staves per page. There are 4 or 5 lines to a stave with red F and yellow c lines, the rest being in dry point. Clefs include c, F, a and D. Initials are red. There are 14th century additions in square notation. The principal contents of the ms, which comes from the cathedral of St. Cyr in Nevers, are a Gradual (f. 9-136v), a Tonary (f. 141v to 146) followed by 3 Kyrie Tro (f. 146-147v), a Hymnary (f. 147v-177v) and a Troper, Proser and Kyriale (f. 177v-244v). The companion ms 1236 is an Antiphoner. The only polyphonic piece is the well-known voice-exchange hymn, lam lucis orto sydere, the two parts following each other on f. 148v (see introduction, p. 21).
