General Description

Four dialogues by Pope Gregory I, and proclamation by one Jacobus, bishop of Bologna from 1244-1260 on fol. 169. At the bottom of f. 169v is the first verse of a two-part Lamentation in Italian neumes. The second part follows the first, so that only the first letter of most words is given for the text of the second voice. The neumes are similar to those on f. 170, which is a page from a 12th century Proser with c, a or both clefs and a red f line at the top.

DIAMM, 2017
Binding

maroon leather over 4 mm. thick pulp boards, ornamented with gilt tooling; 20th century. The 2 blank unnumbered paper flyleaves at both front and back belonging to the binding

DIAMM, 2017
Notation

staffless Italian neumes

DIAMM, 2017
Ruling

appear to be staffless, but there are very faint traces of a dry-point stave, and these traces are confirmed by the c clef which opens the piece.

DIAMM, 2017
Foliation

f. I-II are foliated in modern pencil at t.r.r.; the corpus, f. 1-169 , is foliated in brown, probably from the 18th century. f. 170 also has a modern pencil foliation at t.r.r., perhaps because it is a 12th century flyleaf

DIAMM, 2017
Decoration

12th century minuscule with red initials and rubrics (corpus); the 2 front 12th century flyleaves bear no initials

DIAMM, 2017
Surface

ii paper + II parchment + 170 parchment + ii paper

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 12th century parchment manuscript meas. 251 x 176 mm. and containing II + 170 folios. In addition, there are 2 blank unnumbered paper flyleaves at both front and back belonging to the modern 20th century binding of maroon leather over 4 mm. thick pulp boards, which is ornamented with gilt tooling. The foliation for f. I-II is in modern pencil at t.r.r., that for the corpus f. 1-169 in brown ink which dates probably from the 18th century. Perhaps because it is another flyleaf, this time a 12th century one, f. 170 also has a modern pencil foliation at t.r.r. The body of the codex in fact consists of 4 dialogues by Pope Gregory I, which are written in a neat 12th centnry minuscule with red initials and rubrics. The 2 front 12th century flyleaves bear no initials. Fol. 169, which is in various scripts, contains a proclamation by one Jacobus, bishop of Bologna from 1244-1260, and so the ms may have been in the neighbourhood of this town for a time. At the bottom of f. 169v is the first verse of a two-part Lamentation in staffless Italian neumes ; at least, they appear to be staffless, but there are very faint traces of a dry-point stave, and these traces are confirmed by the c clef which opens the piece. The second part follows the first, so that only the first letter of most words is given for the text of the second voice. The neumes are similar to those on f. 170, which is a page from a 12th century Proser with c, a or both clefs and a red f line at the top.
