RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 12th century parchment manuscript meas. 370 x 247 mm. and containing 257 folios. This Antiphoner and Tonale comes from the monastery of S. Maria di Pontetetto only 2 kilometres from Lucca. There is no foliation apart from the modern pencil one at t.r.r. The minuscule script employs red, red-blue and red-green initials as well as a few very ornate capitals in various colours, including gold and violet. There are 18 staves of elegant Italian neumes per page. The four-line, dry-point staves mostly employ c and f clefs simultaneously. On many pages damp has affected the parchment, and particularly at the end the pages have rotted away at the bottom corner. The binding of original dark brown leather over wooden boards is very worm-eaten. At the end of the ms is an extra loose strip of music containing the Media vita on 2 lines of staff less neumes. The second polyphonic piece is in score and written in a blue ink different from the brown ink of the rest of the ms. The notation is a little squarer too. The first polyphonic piece, on the other hand, is in separate parts and belongs to the ms corpus.
