A collection of disparate material (totalling 284 folios) from the abbey of Ripol in Catalonia, including a substantial number of charters of gift to that house, the latest of which is dated 1218. Its most notable content is the anonymous Latin epic poem, the Gesta Roderici Campi Docti , the earliest life of El Cid, written in a hand of the later 13th century. Music appears on f. 105v-109.' The collection belonged to the great collector Baluze whose library mark, Baluzianus 284 it bears. He inherited the papers of Pierre de Maria (ob. C.1670) who is known to have explored the Ripol library. On the death of Baluze it probably passed directly into the French royal collection as Bib. Regis 3833 - and thence into the Bibliothèque nationale.

RISM B/IV 1: A 13th century parchment manuscript meas. 305 x 222 mm. and containing 109 folios plus 2 blank unnumbered paper flyleaves each end. The binding is a 19th century King's Library binding from Paris in red morocco with gilt tooling over pulp boards. The contents of this Spanish manuscript from the Abbey of Ripoll are varied, but the script is mainly a heavy minuscule with red initials. There is one ornate initial in red and blue on f. 26. A later owner of this source was Baluze. The principal items in the ms are Raymundi de Aguilers historia Hierosolymita ab anno Christi 1095 ad expugnatam Hierosolymam (beginning missing), a disputation between Athanasius and Arius, homilies, letters and gifts to the Abbey of Ripoll. Music appears on f. 107v-109. On f. 108 is Salve, virgo regia with Aquitanian point notation consisting mainly of squares and lozenges on a dry-point five-line stave. Another monody on f. 109v is written on a brown four-line stave. This Vox clarescat, mens purgetur has the Lauda, Sion melody. The polyphony on f. 108v appears to be slightly later than the other pieces, and is written in a heavier point notation on a continuous stave, probably intended to be used in groups of ten lines. Moreover, the simultaneous c and f letter-clefs, which are common to all these pieces, have developed in the two-part composition Cedit frigus hiemale, which is in score with a red wavy line dividing the two parts, to the stage where the f is a long followed by two lozenges.mo
