RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 13th century parchment manuscript meas. 235 x 163 mm. and containing 92 folios. At both beginning and end there are 3 unnumbered paper flyleaves belonging to the relatively modern binding of dark brown leather over pulp boards (now helped out by a brown paper cover). The modern foliation in red ink at t.r.r. dates from 1884. The contents consist of Gratian's Decreti (f. 2-62), Seneca's De quatuor virtutibus (f. 63-64v), then more Seneca and some letters (including a petition by the inhabitants of Alesnes). With regard to the script, one may define it as a neat, slightly Gothic, early 13th century minuscule with red or green initials and red rubrics set out in 2 columns throughout. There are no rubrics or initials after f. 72v, but room has been left for them. The ms originated in St. Bertin as no. 512 of that library. The music was originally used for binding the codex. Fol. 1v uses 10 out of 13 four-line brown staves. The left edge has been cut away. For the notation, the scribe employs Metz neumes (pedes muscarum). Fol. 91 bears the date 1265 when the motets were written down. On this page the scribe uses the guide-lines of the ms corpus, so that the c clef comes in one space and the f clef in the next space below. The neumes are therefore in part staffless, since they do not have enough lines and spaces for diatonic notation. On f. 91v appears the anathema of ecclesie beati Christofori de Phalenpin. Fol. 92 is inserted transversely in the ms and bears the date 1264. Tenor texts are omitted, but the script is identical with that of the previous page. Here 8 five-line staves are employed however, while the page is again cut away at the left. All three folios have music on one side of the page only.
