General Description

A cartulary of St. Mary's Abbey in seven sections: f. 1-11v, 12-13v, 14-18v, 19-24v, 25-27v, 28-29v, and 30-36v; 3 types of script are involved: (a) Beneventan, (b) Carolingian Gothic, and (c) Gothic. The music is a two-part Sanctus on f. 36v. The text has the Tro 'Osanna. Osanna sum meliflua'. The scribe, who probably wrote the music as well as the text, is no. 7 of the Beneventan group.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A parchment cartulary of St. Mary's Abbey containing 36 folios and dating mainly from the 12th and 13th century. The size of the folios varies from 252 x 156 mm. to 251 x 175 mm. A later ternio inserted between folios 2 and 3 of the basic ms measures 188 x 118 mm. There are 7 sections to the ms: f. 1-11v, 12-13v, 14-18v, 19-24v, 25-27v, 28-29v, and 30-36v; and 3 types of script are involved: (a) Beneventan, (b) Carolingian Gothic, and (c) Gothic. The binding is of cardboard covered with parchment, and is in a poor state of preservation. The music is a two-part Sanctus in score on three seven- or eight-line staves. The text has the Tro "Osanna. Osanna sum meliflua". The scribe, who probably wrote the music as well as the text, is no. 7 of the Beneventan group. The notation dates from the early 13th century, and is reminiscent of that in GB-Lo 357. It is a rudimentary square notation, featuring some doubled puncta, occasional virgae harmonised with puncta, otherwise puncta and ligatures, some quite long. The work appears at the very end of the manuscript on f. 36 v.
