RISM Description
RISM B/IV 2: A 13th century parchment manuscript meas. 300 x 210 mm. and containing 117 folios in a binding of plain leather over wooden boards contemporary with the ms but restored in 1941. The main contents are the Liber derivationum by Hugutio de Vercellis, written in a semi-Gothic script in 2 cols. There is no old foliation, but a 19th century pencil foliation appears at t.r.r. The codex was in the Hofbibliothek from the 18th century, and in the Vienna University Library before that. As so often, the music fills up originally empty spaces in the manuscript. It follows a short musical treatise (f. 116v-117) on f. 117-117v and also appears at the beginning on the front flyleaf and at the back, after f. 117 v on the rear flyleaf. Both these unnumbered leaves are glued to the covers. The polyphony appears on the front flyleaf. It is an early version of the two-part polyphonic lesson "Jube domine benedicere. Consurge" in German staffless neumes of the 14th century. There are wormholes in both flyleaves. Gothic neumes of a different type appear on the back flyleaf, while the preceding pages contain Gothic neumes on five-line staves (12 or 13 per page) for the formula "Ter terni sunt modi" and the sequence "Audi chorus organicum".
