General Description

A Gradual (f. 1-152 v) and a Proser (f. 153 to the end),which follows strictly the liturgy of the Sainte Chapelle in Paris. Probably written in Paris. According to a charta of July 20th, 1304, king Charles II of Anjou laid down that the chapel in Bari should follow the liturgy of the Sainte Chapelle strictly, and mentions gifts of liturgical books made for this purpose. Possibly our manuscript was one of those listed in an inventory of 1296. There are 13 gatherings of senios in the Proser, and the Gradual also mainly consists of senios, though the last two gatherings are a ternio and a bifolio. Both parts of the codex are concluded by some chants of the Mass Ordinary. The two-part Kyrie is part of the first batch on f. 150v to 152.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 13th-14th century parchment manuscript meas. 287 x 202 mm. and containing 308 folios numbered in modern pencil at t.r.r.+1 modern unnumbered paper flyleaf at each end. According to Dom Hesbert, the corpus of the Bari ms dates from c. 1250, and no later than 1253. It consists of a Gradual (f. 1-152 v) and a Proser (f. 153 to the end), and its importance resides in the fact that it follows strictly the liturgy of the Sainte Chapelle in Paris. Indeed, it was probably written in Paris, as the Gothic script with alternating blue-red and red-blue initials suggests. The 19th century binding is of dark green leather over pulp boards, and bears on the spine the gilt title "GRADUALE ROMANUM || DE TEMPORE || ET SANCTIS NECNON || ANTIPHONARIUM || ET HYMNARIUM". Both parts of the codex are concluded by some chants of the Mass Ordinary. The two-part Kyrie is part of the first batch on f. 150v to 152. Although it is quite distinct from the other polyphonic piece on f. 156, it probably dates from about the same time, namely the very end of the 13th century. The black square notation is of Notre Dame type, except for the c.o.p. ligatures. Throughout the manuscript there are usually 11 red four-line staves per page (10 on f. 151), and the plainsong uses essentially the same square notation as the polyphony. The second polyphonic piece is notated on 4 five-line staves.ch
