RISM Description

RISM B/IV 4: 14./15.

Jh.

[Translation] 14th/15th century, 6 sheets + 139 sheets of paper, parchment, 210 x 155 mm. Modern pencil foliation from a to f for the pre-bound paper sheets, and the last two parchment leaves f. 142 and 143 are numbered in pencil. Ancient Roman foliation I-CXI (1 hand), CXII-CXX (2nd hand) and CXX-CXLI (3rd hand). Usually 7 four-line systems per page (red and yellow F-c-line) with black-and chorale, divided into 2 columns- five-and six-line systems with mensural notation - Cover: Modern parchment cover.

According to investigations by Leo Eizenhöfer (see literature) the main part of the manuscript consists of 14 layers of parchment bound together. Apart from the numerous addenda, there are two hands which differ. The first 22 fascicles originate from Schreiber I. By the 13th layer (f. 128r) a somewhat later 2nd hand appears, which is dated at the turn of the 14th to the 15th century. On the last sheet, the main scribe appears again. This scribe change, but especially the fact that with the end of the 12th Fascicle the text is lost, i.e. immediately before the onset of the 2nd Hand, indicates that the end of the original codex probably looked very different from the way it does today. E.A. Lowe acquired this codex from a Turin antique store in July 1939 when it was described as a Missale of Italian origin. Among the numerous votive masses, noteworthy are the formulas for St. Eusebius (Patron of Vercelli), Stephan and George. From the owner's endorsement: "Iste liber est sancti Georgii Capelle site in ecclesia sancti Stephani de Bugella", which is written twice on f. 143r by two different hands of the 14th and 15th centuries, it became apparent that the codex belonged to the books of St. George's Chapel in Stephen's Church in Biella (province of Novara).

Contents: (Here, one is directed to the main sections, for a detailed table of contents, see Eizenhöfer) f. af Tonar (15th century); f. 1r-7r creed, tropes, hymns and prayers f. 7v-14r Preface; f. 14v-24v Ordo and Canon missa, f. 24v-34V four votive masses f. 35r-42v Commune Sanctorum, f. 42V-58r Dedications and various festivals, f. 58r-64v Commune defunctorum f. 65r-143v Masses and Prayers and f. 142v incomplete index of one hand of the second half of the 14th Century.
