General Description

A file consisting principally of notarial records 1380-1450 in the hand of notary Bartolomeo di Franco Ridolfi. The leaf in question contains a pair of monophonic dances on the back of a legal document: a land transfer record dated 22 March 1389(1390) which was apparently written after the music on its verso. From the similarity of the hands on the recto and verso it is probable that it was Bartolomeo di Franco Ridolfi also wrote the music and could possibly have been the composer. The notation is in a casual but fluent music hand, with confusing and incomplete markings for the endings and repeats, unclear mensural signs and at least two notes are missing. The title 'Danança amorosa' is a misspelling of 'Dança amorosa'. All the partes have ouvert and clos endings, and three mensural signs appear within the composition, though they are unclear, and a transcription suggests that cut-c is intended in all three places.
