General Description

A Gradual and Antiphonary, with music additions at the beginning and end of the manuscript, by several scribes. All the part-music, with the exception of the 3 works in black void notation is written by different hands. According to Anglès, this monastic Gradual, which formerly belonged to Barbieri, was probably copied in Catalonia.

Music in black void notation obviously dates from the beginning of the 15th century at the earliest, but the other polyphonic works belong to the late 14th century. Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 are in note-against-note style, but no. 6 is in the florid manner of the typical 14th century French polyphonic songs and mass movements.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 14th century parchment manuscript meas. 290 x 215 mm. and containing 199 folios. This Gradual and Antiphonary is written in square plainsong notation for the most part on 10 staves of 4 or 5 red lines per page. Initials are red-blue and rubrics are red. An old foliation at t.m.v. is probably contemporary with the ms corpus written by a single hand. The old binding is of leather over wooden boards. A few other scribes have written odd pieces at beginning and end of the manuscript, and the polyphony may be included among these pieces. All the part-music, with the exception of the 3 works in white notation, is written by different hands. Music in white notation obviously dates from the beginning of the 15th century at the earliest, but the other polyphonic works belong to the late 14th century. Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 are in note-against-note style, but no. 6 is in the florid manner of the typical 14th century French polyphonic songs and mass movements. According to Anglès, this monastic Gradual, which formerly belonged to Barbieri, was probably copied in Catalonia.
