General Description

A Franciscan Breviary-Antiphoner, with polyphony on f. 258r 5. Probably copied in Central Italy. From about 1285 the manuscript was in the Franciscan convent of Perugia (cf dating on f. 2). Around 1890 it was in the collection of Henry Probascos and since 1956 has been in the Newberry Library. The polyphonic piece is on an added sheet.

RISM B/IV 4: 13./14. Jh.; 266 (3+254+9) Blätter + je 1 moderne Vorsatz- und Nachstoßblatt, 195 x 140 mm. Ohne Foliierung. Je Seite wechselnde Zahl von Drei- oder Vierliniensysteme mit beneventanischen Neumen; f. 258r 5 Sechsliniensysteme mit Quadratnotation und nachträglich (?) hinzugefügten Cauden. - Einband: 17./18. Jh.; nachgedunkeltes, ursprünglich weißes Leder mit Blindpressung.

Diese Handschrift ist ein vermutlich in Mittelitalien geschriebenes franziskanisches Brevier-Antiphonar des 13. Jh. (nach 1232). Seit ca. 1285 wurde die Handschrift im Franziskanerkloster von Perugia verwandt (vergleiche Datierung auf f. 2). Um 1890 befand sie sich in der Sammlung Henry Probascos und seit 1956 steht sie in der Newberry Library. Das einzige mehrstimmige Stück ist ein auf einem später hinzugefügten Blatt notierter Nachtrag des ausgehenden 14. oder frühen 15. Jh.

Inhalt: f. 4-30 Brevier; f. 31-33 Kalendar; f. 34-257 Brevier-Antiphonar. - f. 1-3 und 258-266 enthalten auf etwas später hinzugefügten Blätter Nachträge des späten 13. und 14. Jh.

[Translation] 13th/14th century, 266 (3 +254 +9) pages + 1 each modern front and back flyleaves, 195 x 140 mm. Without foliation. Varying numbers of three-or four-line systems per page with Beneventen neumes; f. 258r 5 six-line systems with square notation and later (?) added Caude. Binding: Rebound in the 17th-18th century; originally white leather with blind tooling.

This manuscript, probably copied in Central Italy, is a Franciscan Breviary-Antiphoner of the 13th century (after 1232). From about 1285 the manuscript was in the Franciscan convent of Perugia (cf dating on f. 2). Around 1890 it was in the collection of Henry Probascos and since 1956 has been in the Newberry Library. The only polyphonic piece is on an added sheet copied late in the 14th or early 15th century.

Contents: f. 4-30 Breviary; f. 31-33 Calendar; f. 34-257 Breviary-Antiphonar. ff. 1-3 and 258-266 contain slightly later added flyleaves of the late 13th and 14th Centuries.
