General Description

Formerly two strips, now joined. Copied by two hands, both writing an informal gothica textualis rotunda, responsible for recto and verso respectively. Written in England, possibly at Canterbury. Used to form guards for the first and last quires of C 3. 8, a heavily annotated copy of Epistole et varii tractatus Pii secundi ... (Jean de Vingle; Lyons, 1497) [Hain *158; BMC, VIII, pp. 312-313]. The book was owned by William Gyllyngham, who was a monk of Canterbury by 1495 and still at the Dissolution: 'In custodia Willelmi Gyllyngham monachi ecclesie Christi Cant', preciuni xx d.', fol. 206v. The book appears as 'Pii pontificis Tractatus Y. 5' in a catalogue of the library, made c. 1660 (WHwfm, MS Town Library Early Catalogue, p. 31); the shelfmark 'E 3.5' (s. xvii) is on the fore-edge of the book. Given to Wisbech Town Library by c. 1660.
