General Description

A parchment fragment with ars nova musical notation, possibly from a rotulus, which was removed from the binding of a 1436 manuscript copy of Johannes de Sancto Geminiano's Summula libri exemplorum. It is the only item with mensurally notated music among several detached binding fragments kept together with this host volume. The musical fragment is on average 195 x 125 mm and was evidently removed from the spine of its host volume. The music, which is poorly legible in ambient light, is written in two columns, each measuring nominally 75mm in width with a 10 mm gutter between them. The fragment contains the ending of an unknown Gloria setting on the recto, and part of the well-circulated motet Colla/Bona on the verso. Based on the known amount of missing material from this motet, it can be estimated that the motet occupied approximately twelve staves in this source, the middle five of which are preserved this fragment. Discovered by Richard Dudas, December 2025.
