RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A late 14th century parchment manuscript meas. 221 x 145 mm. and containing 86 folios plus 2 blank paper folios belonging to the binding. The latter dates from the 18th or even the 19th century and consists of white parchment over cardboard; a red painted title-piece at the top of the spine bears the words "Church || Music" in ink. The pencil foliation at t.r.r. doubtless dates from the same time as the binding. The codex was bought from W. Ridler for £ 3 in December, 1886. Its previous owner was the Rev. H. T. Ellacombe, in whose sale it was lot 895. It is a Venitare and Kyriale of the Utrecht use probably from St. Lawrence's, Rotterdam, if one may judge from the troped Benedicamus addressed to St. Lawrence on f. 84. The contents are the tones of the Venite, the Lamentations, 2 Credos, Sanctus and an Agnus a 2, chants for the blessing of the font on Holy Saturday, etc. The notation consists of Gothic neumes of Hufnagel type on 8 brown four-line staves per page with the double clef simultaneously using c and F typical of this notation. In the Patrems, minims are introduced by attaching a tail to oblique breves. Initials are plain but red in colour.
